I’ve been having a great deal of anxiety lately over how to choose a child care provider for Hailey. I recently reduced my stress levels related to this by using one simple technique.

I’d like to share some tips for reducing anxiety related to finding a child care provider for your child.

They have helped me calm down so they may help you.

What I share with you in this post can easily be applied to any situation.


Let’s start of with the reasons for my anxiety.

I am just starting my search but the question I keep asking myself is:

How do I choose a complete stranger to raise my child?

As I’ve been stressed and worried over the last couple of weeks I have realized that the reasons are more to do with the pressure I’m putting on myself to find the perfect child care because they will be spending more time with my daughter than I will each day.

They will be teaching her how to be a little person, teaching her manners, teaching her how to behave, disciplining her, and programming her beliefs about herself and the world.

The first 6 years of life are so important. Thought patterns and belief systems are established during this time period which have massive implications on the rest of their life.

This is serious stuff!

It’s a very important choice that I can’t screw up.

This what keeps repeating in my head. Hence the anxiety.

But as I have been reflecting on this I have realized that I can adopt a different outlook to take the pressure off and reduce my anxiety.

I’ve started shifting my thoughts from worrying about what could go wrong to thinking predominantly about how it could go right.


The technique: Re-frame your thoughts.

Here’s how I’m re-framing my thoughts on this particular subject.

  • I know it’s possible to find great care. Many of my friends have found great child care. Their kids are happy and they are comfortable leaving their child.
  • I know there are wonderful and caring people in this world that Hailey would love. I’ve heard some child care horror stories but I’ve also heard of some really great care givers. I know it’s possible to find a good one.
  • I don’t have to get it right. I can still use my parents as a backup plan if the care is horrible. I also know that if this isn’t an option a friend of mine was able to find child care that she loves within a week or two. So I know it’s possible to make a change fairly quickly if need be.
  • Hailey is manifesting her own reality. Good or bad. I believe Hailey (and everyone in this world) has a level of control over their experiences.
  • Poor child care may lead to something better. When we have a bad experience it gives us clarity on what we do want. This often leads to something better than we could have imagined before going through that experience. Meaning it may be painful for a short period but it’ll be worth it in the end.
  • It’s fear of the unknown. We all tend to have some anxiety when we have to go through a change. But everything always works out. Either right away or eventually. I have never faced a situation that didn’t sort itself out or get better with time.

I’ve felt a lot better talking to other people about choosing child care. It seems like it’s a stressful time for everyone.

Knowing that it’s possible to find great care is what I’m choosing to focus on.

Knowing that I have other options and it’s not the end of the world if I don’t find great care straight away is what has alleviated the pressure I was putting on myself to get it right.

Often the belief that there is only one right answer is what causes us stress.

Like anything in life, if you get it wrong the first time you simply try something else. And keep trying until you find something that works.
